Time for Music

Kindergarten students explored rhythm, movement and sound in Mr. Scheuring’s music class. Along with beat buddies (stuffed animals) and Gilbert the Ghost, the students had fun singing and moving to the beat of the music. At the end of the class, Mr. Scheuring sang the Hawthorn School for Young Learners song “Soaring Eagles,” of which he also wrote the lyrics.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE FROM OUR NURSE:

  • The state of Illinois has not changed the guidelines as far as requirements for entering Kindergarten.
  • This mandate calls for a current  physical examination and  all required vaccinations. The deadline for this is October 15th.
  • If we do not have this information on 10/15/2020, your child will be excluded from learning. (even remotely)

CONFIDENTIALITY & ZOOM: Please review this letter regarding our students’ use of Zoom when participating in remote learning with other caregivers.

ZOOM UPGRADE: We have upgraded our staff to Zoom EDU accounts, which bring additional features to enhance the remote learning environment. This upgrade will require that students log in to Zoom calls with their Hawthorn Google account. The steps needed to do this are included in this document: “Zoom Update for Students” | “Actualización de Zoom para estudiantes.” This document also includes the starting dates when the student login requirement begins, which may be different depending on your child’s grade level.

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT: Hawthorn School District is pleased to offer a service available to anyone in need of emotional support in our community.  Text-A-Tip provides anonymous support by licensed counselors 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. While the line is intended for teens in crisis situations, you do not need to be in crisis or a teenager to use the service.  You can also use the service if you have concerns about a friend or loved one, and need support in getting them help. Simply text your message to 1-844-823-5323 and type “HELLO.”  Within minutes, a live mental health counselor will respond to your text.

Additionally, the Lake County Health Department’s Crisis Care Program offers a free, confidential hotline for anyone experiencing a mental crisis or substance use issue at (847) 377-8088. Counselors are also available in person at 3002 Grand Avenue, Waukegan, Illinois. People wishing to speak with a counselor can call or walk in 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. “A mental health crisis could include overwhelming depression, thoughts of suicide, poor concentration, disturbing thoughts, or feeling out of control,” said Joe Tranchita, Crisis Care Program Coordinator for the Health Department. “We can help you understand what is going on, help you explore your options, offer support, and refer you to the right resources.”

Be well, Eagles!

Welcome

Dear Hawthorn School for Young Learners Families,
Welcome to kindergarten! It is with great excitement that I write this letter of introduction as the principal of the Hawthorn School for Young Learners. I am honored to have the opportunity to open our newest Hawthorn School, and guide you as you begin your journey in a district that is known for its dedication to excellence, and most importantly, to children.

I have been devoted to the field of education for 30 years. I have worked as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal and consider my most important job to be that of a child advocate. I will spend a lot of time with your children, getting to know their personalities, learning styles, and interests. I will celebrate their successes, small and large. I will encourage them every day, and let them know they are valued and have a special place in our school community.

My goal is to ensure that all children are healthy, happy, and safe so they learn as much as they can! This has been my philosophy since I began my teaching career. My vast experience has shaped me as a leader, culminating this last school year with a 2019 National Blue Ribbon Award at Hawthorn Elementary South School. On a personal note, I am married to my high school sweetheart, Shawn, who is a teacher and a photographer. We have two children, Josh (22, software engineer) and Stephanie (20, Occupational Therapy major). People often say I treat all children in my school as if they were my own. Please know I will work tirelessly to ensure all your children have the best possible kindergarten experience.

Not only am I excited to begin working with your child, but I am also looking forward to the work we will do together. “It takes a village to raise a child,” and the HSYL staff and I will be here to work with you every step of the way.

Once again, I am privileged to have the opportunity to bring all that I have experienced and learned to the Hawthorn School for Young Learners. I look forward to getting to know you and your children. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments and/or concerns. I am easily reached at martinj@hawthorn73.org.

Warm regards,
Jill Martin
